Milfoil at Songo Locks
The photos below were taken the last week of July 2008 on the Songo River near the
Songo Locks, which is only 12 miles from Moose Pond. This is a small area of the
"variable leaf milfoil" that LEA is attempting to eradicate. Variable leaf milfoil is one of
eleven invasive non-native plants that are slowly being propagated to Maine lakes and
streams. It currently exists in 25 lakes, streams or rivers in Maine and is usually
introduced by people on their boat or trailer. We must continue the boat inspections which help to keep milfoil out of Moose Pond!
These photos show just how robust this milfoil is with some of the plants in 6 to 10 feet of water.
The photos of the stems indicate how hearty and thick this plant grows.
