On Saturday July 9, 2011, MPA hosted an Invasive Plant Workshop
presented by the Maine Volunteer Lakes Monitoring Program organization. Thirty one particpants atteended the workshop, which included a presentation on native and
invasive plants and how to identify them which was followed by a fun
& challenging hands-on plant identification session with live native and invasive plants. Our hope is that all who attend will be able to spot a
potential invasive plant, obtain a sample and bring it to the attention of LEA. The sooner we can locate and identify an invasive plant, the easier it will be to eradicate it.
Those who attended said they enjoyed the informative session.

MPA Receives Prestigious Award
Moose Pond Association was chosen to receive the Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District's Stewardship Group of the Year Award. This special
award is reserved for a group that displays an unwavering commitment to protecting Cumberland County's natural resources.
As a proactive association in the protection of Moose Pond and its watershed, the Moose Pond
Association has taken the lead in protection and improving the pond's water quality. The Moose
Pond Association has played a critical role in leveraging grant funds to survey the watershed in
2010 by actively pursuing the assistance of the District and providing both cash and in-kind
match contributions towards the project. Moose Pond Association members served on the
survey's steering committee, helped with the on-the-ground survey and its follow-up efforts and
constantly checked in to make sure that everything they could do for this project was being done.
To honor these impressive efforts, the Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District
presented Moose Pond Association with their Stewardship Group of the Year Award
at their Annual Meeting on Wednesday March 30th at the Robie School in Gorham.

August 4, 2009 Invasive Plant Workshop

Volunteer Lakes Monitoring Program (VLMP) instructed participants how to identify invasive aquatic plants, such as non-native milfoil, and native aquatic plants.
Over 40 people attended, 11 of those from MPA. The MPA folks were all impressed with the workshop and found a challenge in identifying live samples of the different plants.
After the session, the MPA group met to map out a plan to start the Plant Survey of Moose Pond. More details will follow on this effort.
