Our Mission
Moose Pond Association's (MPA) mission is to help maintain and improve the quality of life on Moose Pond allowing all to enjoy the lake for
many generations to come.
Our Goals
The primary goal of MPA is the prevention of non-native invasive aquatic plants, especially invasive milfoil, in Moose Pond. In 2009 MPA provided
funding for boat inspectors at the Route 302 boat ramp and the Denmark boat ramp, where over 1000 boats were inspected during 1122 hours of inspections.
In 2010 our goal is to continue to provide both funding and volunteers to perform boat inspections at the Route 302 and Denmark boat ramps. This effort
will start in May and continue through September. Our planned schedule is weekends in May and June at both ramps, each day from July 1st through September 6th
at the Route 302 ramp and Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 1st through September 6th at the Denmark ramp. MPA has received a DEP grant to aid in the
funding of the boat inspections.
Additional goals in 2010:
1) Moose Pond "Invasive Plant Survey"
We believe that Moose Pond has no invasive aquatic plants, but we want to be 100% sure. Our plan is to continue to survey the shoreline for any
invasive plants in the latter part of August. Volunteers will be needed to perform this extensive undertaking. If you can help, please contact
Mark Patterson at mark@patco.com.
2) Moose Pond "Watershed Survey"
Erosion is the Number 1 source of pollution of Maine's surface waters and LEA has a free program to help shorefront landowners prevent and control
erosion. If we really want to protect Moose Pond for future generations we need to take every opportunity we can find to reduce pollutants getting
into the pond. In 2010 MPA, LEA and The Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District will perform a survey of the Moose Pond Watershed to
identify erosion sites. Last year, MPA and CCS&WCD applied for a grant for the necessary funding which was approved. After the survey is completed,
a comprehensive report will be published listing the erosion sites and proposed fixes. We will also apply for another grant to fund fixes at the
high priority erosion sites. Volunteers and additional funding will be provided by MPA for this effort.
We welcome all input on what MPA can do to maintain and improve the quality of life around Moose Pond and the health of the lake itself.
